Saw that yesterday...

I just did the calculations and he should fight the ticket for the 140 over portion.

The stop-watch method is terribly inaccurate at high speeds.  2 tenths of a second over a 1/4 mile sampling is a 10mph difference.

An object as small as a motorcycle, traveling THAT fast, cannot be accurately clocked with a stop watch from an airplane.

Driving without a license?  Well, that's a law in most states (although it is actually an arguable law).  Reckless driving?  by whose standards?  He safely travelled.  How is that reckless?  140 over?  Inaccurate.....

Well a kid north of Madison tried that defense when the WiSP plane clocked him at 140. Judge laughed at him and his lawyer.

great. put the bike on a closed course and see if it's capable of 205 with the perp on it.  I'm betting it's not...

but i do agree... he's going to take a beating over this :)

205? According to someone who saw the news report on TV, it was an RC51.

Which is what, 112 HP stock? (not saying this one is completely stock)

I find 205 pretty hard to believe for any RC51.

I heard "Honda 1000" which encompasses many bikes...

A cbr1000rr, maybe
A cbr1100xx quite likely
RC51, I don't think so...

Well heres some new light on the subject. Local guy emailed the editor of the Pioneer Press and got this back...

QuoteMr. Tilley apparently works at a shop that specializes in supercharging motorcycles, and his bike is, according to the police, custom. The big Hondas are certainly capable of such high speeds under modification, and apparently this guy has (or had?) one. But it is definitely possible he will contest the stopwatch clocking, not that it really matters. So what if he was driving 180, not 205? At that speed, it make little difference legally.

So the kiddie was on a custom motorcycle.

The only true shame of this is the beating all sport bike riders will take from this one for awhile (until Brittany gets an annulment and the press moves on).  I know as racers, officials and enthusiasts on this forum we all know the benefits of being on a track- whether racing, track day riding or taking a class.  I always try to explain to the "You ride on e of them crotch-rockets do ya?" people that we do not ride 'crotch rockets' but sport bikes.  I also try to explain in short terms before thier eyes gloss over about the safety of track vs. street.  For street-freaks I see, I entice them into LP Sport Rider Track Days with CCS or at least any other group.  We currently have bikes that make 135+hp at the rear wheel because the news of street freaks was on the back burner for a few years.  Looks like we may have to lay low again. >:(

yeah this isn't going to be good for us. as if the general public didn't think sportbikes were dangerous enough as it is. sad thing is they're accually safer then other bikes if you look at in the aspect of they have better brakes, suspention, and a more centerd riding possition(which makes for better control).

i'm not sure what the law is like mn. but in iowa you can fight a ticket and usually get off if the officer who wrote said ticket did not show you the radar gun. without radar its just speculation and not fact, and a conviction is suposed to based on fact.

Let's just look at the numbers.  The pilot said he timed the rider as he passed through a 1/4 mile timing distance from 1/2 mile away.

If it were a stock bike, the maximum speed limit set by the manufacturers was 186 mph a few years ago.  At that speed it would take 4.84 seconds to go 1/4 mile.  At 205 mph, it would take 4.39 seconds to go 1/4 mile.  How fast and accurately do you think a guy with a stop watch and two timing lines can push the buttons?

So how many of you have taken your bike to the top speed on the public roads? I know I have. Sure - NOW I'm on the track, but previously I was playing on the road. I don't think we need to look down on this guy for "giving us a bad rap." He just got caught.
Unless y'all have never done this???
